Long snake moaners:
PJ Harvey’s ‘The Community of Hope’ criticised by Washington D.C. politicians
They weren’t very happy about Peej’s description of the city’s Ward 7 neighbourhood.
PJ Harvey’s latest single ‘The Community of Hope’ has come under fire from Washington D.C. politicians. In the satirically titled song, she describes the city’s Ward 7 neighbourhood in bleak terms, singing about the area’s shit-hole schools, and calling it a drug-town filled with zombies. It should be noted that Ward 7 has one of the highest levels of poverty in Washington D.C, and the second highest rate of unemployment in the city. She’s probably raising awareness around a valid issue, basically.
Former mayor Vince Gray - who is running for the Ward’s council seat - didn’t agree, however. “I will not dignify this inane composition with a response,” he told local publication DCist. “PJ Harvey is to music what Piers Morgan is to cable news,” added Gray’s campaign treasurer.
Meanwhile, Grant Thompson - who is also running for Ward 7 - said “I really didn’t get the song.” His loss, eh?
PJ Harvey’s new album ‘The Hope Six Demolition Project’ is out on April 15th. Listen to ‘The Community of Hope’ below.
