Premiere: Listen: Trudie Dawn Smith Shares ‘No Pop’ (Raisa K Remix)

Listen to Micachu and the Shapes’ Raisa K divert a stirring debut single into even weirder territory.

Trudie Dawn Smith

dresses her songs up in all kinds of odd idiosyncrasies. When she calls a track ‘No Pop’, it’s sort of a literal statement, but it’s not legally binding. What might be a straight-down-the-line pop track is steered outwards, sent into more inventive territory where even the odd coughing noise is allowed to enter the frame. It’s led her to the STAC (Strange Things Are Coming) label, an offshoot from Ninja Tune.

If ‘No Pop”s original was an attention-diverting number defined by its clearheadedness, a new Baggy Remix from Raisa K (best known for being a part of the Micachu and the Shapes trio) makes things even weirder. Original vocal stems are pitch-shifted to the point where they sound like sinister pipe instruments. This could be the dawning of the apocalypse if we didn’t know any better; doomy, fierce, and definitely not pop.

We’ve got the first play, below. Trudie Dawn Smith’s debut single is out now on STAC.
