Mercury Prize 2015 - Roisin Murphy - “I’ve got a one in twelve chance”
Irish songwriter’s ‘Hairless Toys’ is in it to win it.
Speaking ahead of the Mercury Prize ceremony (tonight from 9.30pm), Róisín Murphy has an astute summary of a potential win: “I’ve got a one in twelve chance.” She’s not wrong.
2015 LP ‘Hairless Toys’ was released back in May, eight years after her previous LP, ‘Overpowered’. “I don’t think it’s a comeback album,” she says. “It was made in a vacuum, without any kind of concern for the outside world, really.”
“I’ve worked in lots of different ways; with pop producers, on songs where there are eight people on one song. But with this record, it’s just me and one other guy - Eddie Stevens.”
Asked what she’d do with the 20k winnings if she won, Murphy says: “I’d give it to me mum! The cash, not the trophy. I’m only thinking about the cash.”
And if she doesn’t pick up the prize, Murphy’s backing Aphex Twin’s ‘Syro’. “It’s an amazing record. He’s done some super amazing things for British music, so he might deserve it.”
