Run The Jewels reflect on Ferguson in new BBC documentary

One year on from the death of Michael Brown in Ferguson, BBC Worldwide have commissioned a documentary reflecting on the aftermath of the tragedy, featuring Run The Jewels.

Since last year’s tragedy, Killer Mike has been especially vocal about Brown’s death, writing op-eds and appearing on panel shows to discuss race relations in North America. Many of Run The Jewels’ videos and singles from their recent album ‘Run The Jewels 2’ have echoed police brutality in America, most notably ‘Close Your Eyes (And Count To Fuck’.

The new documentary captures El-P and Killer Mike on a recent trip to Europe, introducing Run The Jewels as “your fantasy utopian representation of race relations in the world.” The same day of the Ferguson tragedy, Killer Mike gave a speech at a St. Louis concert (footage appears in the clip) which El-P describes as “the weird, tragic and serendipitous experience of being the only band when the verdict was coming down in St. Louis to be attempting to get into St. Louis.”

Killer Mike also expresses his belief that the riots since Ferguson have worked: “Post-riots, [Ferguson has] two new black city council members, they have actual advocates in the community now, and the police chief retired,” he says. “So if it was argued that riots worked for Ferguson, absolutely they did.”
