Sad13 gets her choreography on in ‘Get A Yes’ video

The Speedy Ortiz ringleader brings dance routines and geometric gubbins to a seriously vital message.

Sad13 gets her choreography on in 'Get A Yes' video

Speedy Ortiz frontwoman Sadie Dupuis recently put out her debut solo album under her moniker Sad13, and lead single ‘Get A Yes’ stood out from the beginning. Discussing the issue of consent, and bottling open communication into glittery, pop-doused form, it was a highlight of ‘Slugger’. Now it’s got a video to match, and as you’d expect, it’s equally as empowering.

Filmed together with Sadie’s childhood friend childhood friend and dance archivist Patsy Gay in Bushwick’s Silent Barn community centre, ‘Get A Yes’ takes a lighthearted look at the rules of consent, using the metaphor of dancing. “Kindness is key” advises one section, while another instructs “always start your routine by asking your partner if they would like to dance.”

“I wanted to make a tribute to ’90s-style group dance videos, and my childhood friend Patsy Gay, who spends her days as a dance archivist, put together a sample reel of choreography using moves from Spice Girls, Aaliyah, Salt-N-Pepa, Janet Jackson, and Jordan Knight vids,” says Sadie of the ‘Get A Yes’ video. “Plus Stephanie Tanner and Urkel. Isabel Farrington, who directed the video, styled it as a late-night TV infomercial about teaching the dos and don’ts of getting consent to dance with your partner.”
