Saltwater Sun mix vicious takedowns with ray-doused pop on 'Now or Never'

Every weekday, DIY’s new music know-it-all Neu brings you one essential new release to get obsessed with. Today’s Neu Pick comes from Saltwater Sun.

There’s a brilliant tension coursing through ‘Now or Never,’ the latest to come from Reading thrillseekers Saltwater Sun. According to the band, it’s “a rallying cry against the ruthless,” like all good takedowns, it starts out innocuously enough.

“They choose things to defile,” sings Jennifer Stearne over carefully contained strums. Like the calm before the storm, or a room that’s just a little too quiet, the sense of security is short-lived. “You’re a real fucker,” chides Stearne, confrontational and assured over ducking, diving guitars, a haze of space-flecked fuzz getting larger by the second. Raucous, and sun-drenched, ‘Now or Never’ is a glossily ambitious beast, armed with sharply-barbed lyrical claws.

We’ve got the first spin of Saltwater Sun’s new song ‘Now or Never’ below. It’s the first taste of their upcoming EP ‘FLAWED’.

Saltwater Sun play The Great Escape (19th-21st May) where DIY is an official media partner. Tickets are on sale now. Visit diymag.com/presents for more information.
