Neu Pick
Sløtface dream of working at ‘Empire Records’ in new single
Ahead of heading out on a UK tour, the Norwegian rabble rousers are today’s Neu Pick.

Every weekday, DIY’s new music know-it-all Neu brings you one essential new release to get obsessed with. Today’s Neu Pick comes from Sløtface.
Name-checking a 90s flick that follows a bunch of independent record store employees as they try to defend their shop being bought out by a retail giant is always a great start, song-wise. ‘Empire Records’ by Sløtface, then, already has the makings of a monster, and it more than delivers.
The title-track of a new EP from the Norwegian rabble-rousers dreams of “working in a run-down record store” to escape a constant cycle of sleeping in too late on Sundays, and getting stuck in a repeating loop of Netflix binges. Elsewhere on ‘Empire Records’ Haley Shea also offers to play bass for fictional band Sonic Death Monkeys (from another noughties movie, High Fidelity). As well as being a pop culture dot to dot, the song sees Sløtface soaring atop crisp snares, restlessly fidgeting plunks of bass and curling, squealing guitar solos. It’s an all-out winner.
On 4th November, Sløtface take to Manchester’s Fallow Café, fora DIY Presents gig alongside Bruising, PLAZA, and CAESAR. They’re also off on a full tour - keep scrolling for details of where to catch the Scandinavians over the next few months.
