Slowdive: “The stars aligned - it’s cheesy, but it’s true”

The now reunited band say they’ve lost the angst after twenty years.

Ahead of newly reunited Slowdive’s first UK festival slot in twenty years, DIY caught up with the band’s Rachel Goswell. Straight back from a string of festival bookings across Europe, the band are pleased to be back, and they’re relishing the chance to play to younger fans at Latitude, too. “I’m really looking forward to tonight,” she says, “it’s really nice to see a real cross-section of ages, and young people still listening to us. It’s been twenty years!”

Since first time round, she adds, not much has changed. “We’re really juvenile, it’s all very Spinal Tap. Nobody’s angsty any more, though,” she adds, “we’re past that. It feels really right to be playing together, we have so much fun. That’s the important thing, and I think that can sometimes get lost away”

Slowdive’s Latitude set today, Rachel explains, wasn’t so much a long-planned twenty-year comeback so much as sheer luck and a bit of good timing. “The stars aligned,” she laughs. “It’s cheesy, but it’s true.”

Slowdive play Latitude’s 6 Music Stage at 20.30pm tonight.
