St Vincent explains how she wrote new song 'Teenage Talk'

St Vincent recently debuted snippets of a new song, ‘Teenage Talk’, on Lena Dunham’s US comedy show Girls. Earlier this week it got its first airing in full when Annie Clark performed it on Jimmy Fallon’s The Tonight Show. Now the show has shared a backstage interview with Clark about the process behind the song.

It’s a deeply nostalgic song, says Clark, and much of the lyrical inspiration comes from her own childhood growing up in Texas. She’d regularly, she explains, get up to all sorts of tricks, like hiding in the bushes from the cops, trying unsuccessfully to procure illegal substances, and rolling cars down people’s driveways.

“I have a whole lot of love for Texas, still; roots, and friends, family, connections,” St Vincent told The Tonight Show. “[‘Teenage Talk’] was reminding me of my best friends in my youth. We were the kids that had older brothers and sisters, so all we cared about was music…It was incredibly formative. I feel super, super blessed - which is not a word I even use - to have met them in the suburbs of Dallas, Texas…We were outsiders, and we had to find our way through the malaise.”
