The Flaming Lips are making a “fun” and “emotional” new record
Wayne Coyne’s collaborations with Miley Cyrus could wind up on an eventual LP.
The Flaming Lips’ Wayne Coyne says his band are working on a new record, which he describes the most “fun” and “emotional” thing he’s ever done.
Speaking to SPIN, Coyne confirmed that he’s about to go into the studio with longtime producer Dave Fridmann. New material is stemming from writing sessions with Miley Cyrus. “We have maybe six or seven that are both Flaming Lips songs and Miley Cyrus songs at the same time,” the frontman says.
Elaborating, he says: “There’s the version that we do with her in more of her style of singing and sometimes a good bit of her lyrics, and then we’ll do the same song as a Flaming Lips song with mine and Steven’s style and my lyrics.”
Draft track titles include ‘The Milky Milky Milk’ (“it’s based on how Whole Foods was corrupting all these people that I used to know who hated the idea of health food”) and ‘Tiger Dreams’.
Speaking further about his working relationship with Cyrus, Coyne says: “My songs have never been this fun and this emotional, because I’m not the one singing them. I’m writing them and thinking about them like, “What would Miley Cyrus be singing about here?”
The Flaming Lips’ new album will follow 2013’s ‘The Terror’.
