Those massive smirks say it all - The Maccabees are very, very excited to be back. With fourth album ‘Marks to Prove It’ out next month, the London-based five-piece are positively beaming about what’s in store.

With a little help from their friends, they provide a pendulum swing of a set, flying from cutting, loyalist anthems to softly-softly new material. Expanded to a seven-piece on stage with pianos and added percussion, they’re also joined by Jamie T for ‘Marks to Prove It’, his role being to add a barmier, more storming mentality. It’s not sorely required - beginning with ‘Wall of Arms’, they run back through previous LPs with relentless pace, but it’s the newbies that steal the show.

The fourth album is billed as a studio head, a determinist work that’s defined by exactitude and its constantly-changing landscape of South London’s Elephant & Castle. Orlando Weeks gives a quick mention to the home of their new LP, but the rest of their set is devoted to the thousands pacing up and down on a muddy field. And make no mistake - The Maccabees might cover all bases with a serious, production-obsessed album, but it’s going to come to life even more on the stage. ‘Something Like Happiness’ is an instant anthem, and although ‘Grew Up At Midnight’ closes things on a strange lull, this is a bright celebration of old and new.
