The Wombats preview new album with ‘Emoticons’ track

Liverpool group get the full 100 for their ‘Glitterbug’ highlight.

With their third ‘Glitterbug’ album out this April, Liverpool’s The Wombats are flipping smileys on their head with a new track, ‘Emoticons’.

Matthew ‘Murph’ Murphy sidesteps sanity in the group’s latest, linking up with ‘Greek Tragedy’ in balancing The Wombats’ signature sentiment with an extra dose of invention. It’s premiering on DIY below, and it’s more than worthy of the full 100 emoji, or at least the sassy dancer emoji.

‘Glitterbug’ is produced by Mark Crew (Bastille) and The Wombats, with tracks penned in Los Angeles. On ‘Emoticons’, Murph bellows out: “I like you here so much I could stay,” caught in between home and his new obsession. “As time progressed, I’d go to L.A. more and more, and the idea kept on building. The album’s about the envy and the struggle and the pretence and the worry and the fear that L.A. – and every major city in the world – encompasses,” Murph says in a statement about the LP.

The new album is release on 6th April - check out forthcoming UK dates above the player.
