Venture Lows strike gold on ‘Can’t Stand You’
The Hello 2017 alumni return with a biting new cut.
Every weekday, DIY’s new music know-it-all Neu brings you one essential new release to get obsessed with. Today’s Neu Pick comes from Venture Lows.
When Venture Lows played DIY’s Hello 2017, their unconventional set-up - two bassists and no drummer - gave the night, and indeed the start of the year, a much-needed shake up, with a brutal low-end that shook the windows at the Old Blue Last.
Their new track ‘Can’t Stand You’, the flipside to recent single ‘Brenda’, manages to translate this live promise onto record, every bit as groovy yet gritty as the best of Death From Above 1979.
It’s when the track opens out from its rigid verse into a loose, free second half though, that ‘Can’t Stand You’ becomes a real earworm. The dark, stomping track becomes a mid-‘00s indie cut that sticks in the brain like superglue, and shows Venture Lows to be more multi-dimensional than first thought, two bassists and all.
