20th January is officially David Bowie Day in New York

Bowie lived in the city for over twenty years, describing himself as “a New Yorker.”

New York has officially declared 20th January 2016 to be David Bowie Day. The announcement was made last night by the city’s mayor Bill de Blasio at the final performance of Lazarus - the musical Bowie co-produced. David Bowie lived in the city for over twenty years, and considered New York his home. “I can’t imagine living anywhere else,” Bowie once said. “I’ve lived in New York longer than I’ve lived anywhere else. It’s amazing: I am a New Yorker.” Following news of his death, fans gathered outside his SoHo apartment block to lay flowers and tributes. Meanwhile in Austin, Texas, fans altered the road sign on downtown Bowie Street, adding a ‘David’ decal to the sign. SXSW co-founder Roland Swenson took responsibility for the new road name. It has since been removed.
