Alpines - Oasis

Despite the lack of immediately catchy hooks and anthems, Alpines’ debut album is impressive for its almost hypnotic qualities, taking the listener away and placing them in an alien environment of soulful lyricism and darkly atmospheric beats. This London-based duo probably won’t generate the song of the summer with ‘Oasis’, but if any listener is willing to take the time to appreciate the album not as individual tracks but as a unique and fascinating whole the experience will surely prove itself worthwhile.

Despite this, there are individual standouts for those looking for a shorter experience as ‘Saviour’ possesses the most memorable hook on the album and ‘Chances’ is equally affecting thanks to the soothing yet raw emotional quality to it. But nonetheless this is one of those albums which craves the attention and time of a complete play through whilst also providing the consistent quality that deserves it. Far from being front-loaded, the album seems to get even better as it digs into the deep cuts and becomes a more immersive experience.

One could possibly accuse ‘Oasis’ of being occasionally repetitive in its style, though there are enough individual elements per track to keep it feeling almost entirely fresh throughout. Though it has a distinctive sound and a number of strong tracks that suggest there is a strong future for Alpines, what makes ‘Oasis’ special is its rare ability to draw the listener in to its world and create a unique listening experience that must be heard to be understood.
