Doe - Some Things Last Longer Than You

London trio Doe showed a bucketload of promise with their quartet of EPs, collated into a ‘First Four’ compilation in 2014. Everything that made the band’s beginnings so exciting is condensed and refined on ‘Some Things Last Longer Than You’ to come together as everything their early recordings hinted at.

Straight from opener ‘No. 1’, ‘Some Things…’ is a restless listen, with no single drum pound or crunching power chord feeling less than vital. As has consistently been the case over the past few years, producer MJ of Hookworms has beefed up the band’s sound to intense levels, with the space left by the lack of a bass guitar not felt at all, as it sometimes was on ‘First Four’.

Vocalist Nicola Leel’s lyrics feel vicious and without restraint on ‘Sincere’, and the lack of sincerity spoken of in the song isn’t something Doe present at all - everything here is undeniably genuine.

Though ‘Some Things…’ is largely a somewhat angry album, Leel does manage to turn her discontent into humour at points - “I never liked your family anyway, they used to cheat at Monopoly every time we would play”, just lines after she spits “trying is such a waste, when I’ve grown to hate your face.”

‘Last Ditch’ is the hit of the record - a track that embodies everything it sings of, infectious in its desperation, while ‘Corin’ brings Doe’s brutal side to the fore, with Leel’s screams hitting like a train. Doe always hinted at such results from an LP, and ‘Some Things Last Longer Than You’ delivers the lot and then some with devastating power and sincerity.
