Mac DeMarco - Here Comes The Cowboy
3 StarsFor a singer that was always so charismatic, being just ordinary feels like a bit of a bummer.
When Mac DeMarco first broke through back in 2012 with debut album proper ‘2’, it was the cheeky-chappy twinkle in his eye that set his simple, heart-on-sleeve warm balladry apart. Over the years, Mac has understandably grown up a bit - from getting naked and boozy on stage, he now spends most interviews trying to distance himself from that former rep. But, while we’re not expecting the Canadian to be Peter Pan forever, there’s something of that early charm that’s also been lost along the way. ‘Here Comes The Cowboy’ is by no means bad, and there are moments of grin-inducing greatness in the warm lilt of ‘Finally Alone’ or the playful funk of ‘Choo Choo’, but the moments of personality that punctuate the mid-tempo amble that’s always been the singer’s go-to are fewer and further between. The result is an album that’s pleasant but kind of passes you by, and for a singer that was always so charismatic, being just ordinary feels like a bit of a bummer.
