PinkPantheress - Fancy That

Scratching just about every nostalgic itch.

PinkPantheress - Fancy That

It’s not surprising that this second mixtape from PinkPantheress delivers another sampling of Just Jack’s ‘Stars In Their Eyes’: reanimating throwback Top Tens is her (hand)bag, after all. On ‘Fancy That’, ‘Stars’ (a re-upped version of Pink’s 2021 song ‘Attracted To You’) joins a time capsule stuffed with samples of or references to other British classics, including, notably Basement Jaxx’s ‘Romeo’ (‘Girl Like Me’); the Adina Howard / Sugababes hit ‘Freak Like Me’ (‘Stateside’); and even the William Orbit deep cut ‘Spiral’ (‘Nice To Know’). Less obvious is the oddly placed use of Panic! At The Disco’s ‘Do You Know What I’m Seeing?’ on flirty lead single ‘Tonight’, but it’s all in service of capturing PinkPantheress’ no-holds-barred knack for reminiscently repurposing core UK pop culture.

This time around, mind, she energises the signature emo-meets-jungle minimalism present on debut ‘Heaven knows’: ‘Fancy That’’s Clubland-era house, British garage, and thworpy club beats are bitesized dancefloor fillers, all propelled by high BPM pseudo-nightcore. Supported by a range of contemporary pop innovators - The Dare, Count Baldor, and Oscar Scheller, to name just three - ‘Fancy That’ scratches just about every nostalgic itch her listeners might have, all while remaining on the pulse of what’s next.
