If bands didn’t write songs like Nickelback’s ‘Rockstar’, the cliché about second albums being merely a document of what it’s like to be in a band, touring, releasing records and being recognised in the street wouldn’t exist. Sadly, Nickelback have been able to release approximately six albums too many, but you get the point. If people didn’t think it clever to boast about their exploits, then others wouldn’t make a joke about it. Even Mike Skinner trod a fine line with his last record. And he’s someone whose entire opus is autobiographical.
‘We’re In The Music Biz’ sees Sue and Dee diving head-first in to the deep end: ‘Can’t Stop Getting Wasted’ is self-evident, ‘I Live In Berlin’ even moreso, and even if it weren’t following a pattern, ‘Everybody’s Going Crazy’ would make it so. It’s much as before from the girls, a lot of attitude, a few catchy hooks, and those dual vocals on which their entire sound is based.
The only issue we’ve got is with the title track: Robots in Disguise aren’t known for being ‘a bit rubbish’, or whatever their lyrics want to suggest. However instant their European electro-pop (and ‘The Sex Has Made Me Stupid’ is very much so, at that), they’re mostly known for being ‘those two girls off The Mighty Boosh’. Still, ‘We’re In The Music Biz And A Bit Of Television’ doesn’t have the same ring to it.
