!!! - AM / FM
4 StarsAt once danceable in a very primal way, and sonically innovative.
Although the drums that see in ‘AM/FM’ recall in their all-encompassing hugeness The Chemical Brothers at their ’90s peak this single in drenched in the identity of !!!. Dance-rock crossover genres have come and gone since the dance-punk collective reached their critical peak with the brilliantly weird track ‘Me And Giuliani Down By The School Yard (A True Story)’ but they’ve steadfastly remained brilliant, if hardly prolific.
The band have always managed to work their way around intriguing song structures whist remaining a tight and funky outfit; at once danceable in a very primal way and sonically innovative. There’s no change on ‘AM/FM’. No longer are they politically or censor baiting however, this sounds like they are at their most relaxed and as such created the song that seems the most likely to reach a wider audience. That’s not to say that ‘AM/FM’ is weighted down with a ridiculously huge chorus; there’s plenty of other acts who can throw those type of pop and dance songs away in their sleep. No, ‘AM/FM’ is the best party groove of the summer.
If you want a single with a low end to blow speakers, all the shine of a decent hip-hop production and stabs of guitar summery that Vampire Weekend will need to re-group and think of a new strategy then download ‘AM/FM’. If nothing else then remember: without !!! and their contemporaries then we’d be short one Friendly Fires right now.
