Attic Lights – I Could Be So Good For You

It’s far from awful but we were expecting something more.

Attic Lights

are in many ways fairly typical of most major label ‘indie’ music (if you’ll forgive the oxymoron). Their debut album ‘Saturday Night Lights’ was a patchy affair to say the least but did contain the thoroughly ace single ‘Bring You Down’, therefore when we heard that the band were covering ‘I Could Be So Good For You’ for the new series of Minder we were more than a little curious to see what had become of it.

This new version of the original Dennis Waterman theme (yes he did write the theme tune and sing the theme tune etc…) sadly doesn’t do what we were hoping from it. We know that Attic Lights are fully capable of performing soaring choruses in a Beach Boys / Shins fashion but sadly there’s very little of this here. Instead we get a near note for note cover of the original which would be less than memorable had we not been familiar with Waterman’s version.

It’s far from awful but we were expecting something more. Thankfully the bass sounds much improved from the original, which always seemed marred in a terrible late 70s slap sound. It’s a nice try, and for a television theme tune we probably should have had lower expectations, so we’ll just leave it at ‘inoffensive’ and be done with it.
