Dan le Sac Vs Scroobious Pip – Thou Shalt Always Kill (De La Edit)

A decent new take on what these two gentlemen do so well.

This is more re-recording that it is a re-release of Dan Le Sac and Scroobious Pip’s novelty rap single ‘Thou Shalt Always Kill’. As a representation of the brilliant album ‘Angles’ the original version of this was never accurate, although it’s wisdom was blatant and often funny. The ‘De La Edit’ then features Pos Plug Won from hip-hop legends De La Soul, and makes slight tweaks and massive additions to the album version.

Vocalist Scroobious Pip now duets with Pos Plug Won with a pretty much entirely new vocal. Snippets of the original are here and there, as an example the “just a band” section now name checks more rap groups (Beastie Boys, Tribe Called Quest and even De Le Soul) than it does guitar bands. Former tour mates Kid Carpet also get a shout.

As with all of Le Sac and Pip’s material the real charm lies in the lyrics, and there’s far too many words of wisdom to print all of them here. Keeping with the spirit of the original, it’s a song of funny and clever one-liners. Highlights of the additions from Pos Plug Won include an instruction to “not type LOL unless thou is really laughing out loud” and a slightly disturbing comment about not thinking “that Tina Turner can’t shake her ass harder than Beyoncé”. Mr Pip also now dispenses advice about bloggers (“thou shalt not think that having a blog makes you a journalist”), opinions on musical genres (‘just styles’) and the instruction to follow political parties based upon policies rather than family allegiances (“they are not football teams”).

Other changes on this edit include the shortening of the song (getting rid of the instrumental outro) and slight tweaks to Dan Le Sac’s beats, these make little difference really and the only negative aspect of the remix is that on a couple of occasions the mix between old vocals and the new recordings are apparent. This isn’t enough to distract from the overall quality though. If you’ve got and like ‘Angles’ this is a decent new take on what these two gentlemen do so well and is certainly worth the cash. As a single for the un-initiated, it’s good but worth more in the context of the original.
