Death Cab For Cutie - I Will Possess Your Heart

The lead single of the indie stalwarts’ latest album ‘Narrow Stairs’ is, as you might expect, a fairly pleasant affair, beginning with pretty guitars sounding like a string section and a darned good bass line. From there the drums come in and provide a very solid backing to the keyboard melody, keeping the entire song steady. If nothing else, ‘I Will Possess Your Heart’ has given Death Cab For Cutie’s rhythm section a deserved chance to shine.
The chorus of ‘You gotta spend some time love, you gotta spend some time with me’, seems something of the mantra for these guys, and claiming that if this happens then possession of your body’s vital blood pumper will be theirs seems to be explicitly saying that this one’s a grower. That this chorus is delivered with confidence may surprise some who’ve written this band off many a time, but as to weather or not this will be enough to win them over is doubtful as Death Cab are a band that seem to divide opinion.
Despite its conciseness the radio edit of this song is not entirely a solid defence against those who do call them wet, but should you be a fan already then the chances are you’ve made up your mind in the opposite way about this single. After all, it is kind of catchy…
