Creeper - The Stranger
4 StarsDespite having just fourteen songs to their name, Creeper’s evolution is already one for the ages.
Flamboyance was part and parcel of the Creeper ethos from day one. Taking the goth-punk template and tarting it up with as much pomp as it could take, they relished the glitz and shimmer of their more fantastical influences. On ‘The Stranger’, though, those ever-active imaginations finally leave the shadows completely behind, to dazzling effect.
From the borderline-Meatloaf cabaret croon of ‘Black Mass” huge final waltz to the defiant and gloomy in equal measure closer ‘Astral Projections’, it’s a third EP that harbours a playful musicianship and songwriting talent that could turn groups ten times Creeper’s age green with envy. Finally shedding those My Chemical Romance and AFI associations, no stone’s too daring to upturn in Creeper’s gleeful skip through all manner of new worlds.
Despite having just fourteen songs to their name, Creeper’s evolution is already one for the ages. By the time that debut LP rears its head, they may well be the one of the country’s most vibrant and vital new bands.
