Lady GaGa has smashed her way back onto the music scene with a pop anthem that speaks to the disenfranchised, those who ever felt different or even dared to be so. ‘Born This Way’ is GaGa at her flamboyant best; a message of empowerment set against an insanely electric disco beat that invades your mind.
Whatever your opinions on her, and there is a real split on the girl-gone-GaGa, there’s no denying her musical ability. She’s a talent and a force of nature in the charts, but there was great trepidation over this latest offering. When she started releasing lyrical titbits and singing downbeat clips at award ceremonies, there was a fear that ‘Born This Way’ might be some grimly saccharine Aguilera ballad circa 2001-2006. Then we heard it.
Yes, the chorus does bear – to even the most untrained / deaf ear – similarities to Madonna’s ‘Express Yourself’, but there’s more to this song than anything that’s festering in Madge’s paper thin repertoire. ‘Born This Way’ manages to straddle the line between homage and carbon copy with flourishes that are purely and absolutely GaGa. Get your paws up and never be ashamed of who you are. Everyone has a little monster inside.
