La Roux gives electro-pop a striking edge at Latitude 2015

If first impressions are anything to go by, La Roux gets her set off to an incredibly strong start. As Elly Jackson and co. take over the 6music stage this evening, there’s something incredibly potent about her and her bandmates. Whether it be the band’s striking look - Jackson herself is dressed in a striped black-and-white suit jacket with spotless white trousers - or the way she moves around the stage, feinting and jolting with the beat of each track, they’re a band who you can’t quite tear your eyes from.

It’s not just about the aesthetics either: their musical offerings are deliciously funky, with cuts from her newest record ‘Trouble In Paradise’ seemingly taking the front seat. The likes of ‘Uptight Downtown’, ‘Tropical Chancer’ and ‘Sexotheque’ are mesmerising and sassy, bold and defined and they sound even more full of life on the stage.

It’s all coloured strobes and constant action throughout, with the group descending into a fully blown frenzy towards the end of ‘Silent Partner’, as Jackson thrashes around the drum kit. Yet, it’s when they burst into some of the older hits, the tent goes crazy. ‘In For The Kill’ provokes huge singsongs early on, and set closer ‘Bulletproof’ sees the audience explode; people scramble up onto shoulders, arms are aloft and voices are raised high. Potent, powerful, yet still undeniably pop, La Roux’s set is as affecting as it is fun, and that’s all you can really hope for on a weekend like this.
