Skepta takes grime’s biggest step on Glastonbury’s Pyramid Stage
Friday’s action kicked off with an enormous main stage appearance.
“I’m your work-out instructor,” quips Skepta in front of an enormous Pyramid Stage crowd. The crowd are certainly in the mood to move, starting Friday’s proceedings with an energy-filled set that sees Skepta take grime’s biggest step yet, on the biggest stage of all.
There’s guests galore at the set - Novelist appears for a cameo, and by closer ‘Man’, the amount of friends joining Skepta on stage reaches double figures, while ‘Shutdown’ is an expected triumph.
Bikes are ridden across the stage. Selfies are everywhere. It feels like an all-out party, and one Skepta’s been building up to for the last year. Songs from ‘Konnichiwa’ are already greeted like classics, with moshpits breaking out during ‘It Ain’t Safe’.
Every Skepta show this year is going to feel special, but Glastonbury - and the Pyramid Stage especially - feels like the greatest moment yet for the genre and the scene. On a day where many feel ashamed to be British, Skepta’s pioneering a movement that instills pride and shows it at its absolute best, and today’s manifesto connected with thousands.
