Tame Impala really let it happen at Glastonbury 2016

The Aussies live up to the lofty expectations with their humongous Pyramid Stage set.

On Glastonbury’s Pyramid Stage, Tame Impala unleash the confetti cannons approximately four minutes into proceedings during their shimmying robot monster, ‘Let It Happen’. And why the hell not?

In the past year, Kevin Parker and co. have soared from psych outliers to certified chart-dwellers, by way of a banger-rousing third album, a massive BRIT award win, a Mark Ronson-collab and a cover by a certain lady named Rihanna. Accordingly, there’s an eye-poppingly huge crowd here today.

Boogieing away barefoot, while standing on a really rather tasteful rug, Kevin Parker’s come out of his shell as a frontman and then some. Marvelling at a rainbow over the festival site, running up and down the pit, and gleefully informing everyone assembled that the band’s Jay Watson is very hungover - “it’s all of your faults!” Jay quips in defence – Tame Impala’s previously hazy introspection makes way for something more punchy.

Self-titled EP cut ‘Elephant’ rears its trunk, causing dangerous levels of mud-stomping in the process, and ‘Feels Like We Only Go Backwards’ glitters and sways the sunset into action. Moving out of the bedroom studio, and plunging headlong into a bottomless ocean of pure pop, Tame Impala prove themselves as one of the most exciting bands in the world. And what’s more, things are only just getting started.
