‘Stand’

tries and nearly succeeds in welding together disparate genres from many eras into a subtle dancefloor track. With this trick being something far from simple to pull off, when Othello Woolf falls short or outside of our tastes it’s difficult for us to actually slate him.

Recorded in the man’s ‘home studio’ the single is an amalgamation of David Byrne sounding vocals, synthetic funk basslines and occasional swift keyboard interjections. The slick new-wave guitar sometimes sadly makes ‘Stand’ far too reminiscent of disco for this reviewers taste but objectively it’s not actually a bad thing. At under three minutes it’s short and tight and doesn’t outstay it’s welcome. It is easy to see how under the right circumstances and for the right crowd this could go down rather well on the dancefloor. Really it’s one for later in the night/earlier in the morning when the party is winding down, the fatigue’s setting in and the booze/drugs are wearing off a little.

Also packaged with this is the Golden Silvers remix which adds in a wobbly bassline, less naff keyboards and some backing harmonies that gives more focus to the main vocal and in all improving the track.
