Those unfamiliar with debut album ‘YoYoYoYoYo’ will probably better know Spank Rock as the dapper-looking young rascal in Mark Ronson’s sweet little ditty about bicycles. So, indeed, you may be forgiven for expecting something a little bit twee, a sell-out song intended to snag that all important top 40 position. ‘#1 Hit’ might have a title that aims for the high-reaches of chartdom, but it’s tongue in cheek all the way.
With promises like “I can get you paparazzi, put you in the page 6 bitch” Mr Spank Rock is promising us fame, names in lights, ladies lining up for attention; the whole lifestyle instantly. Like a package holiday to Barbados for £2.50, it sounds far too good to be true. Spank is promising us everything for nothing – but as we know, nothing comes without a cost these days.
‘#1 Hit’ has an infectious afrobeat, a grimy synth line, and Juwan’s delivery mimics the auto tune that is so central to generic pop music. Taken at complete face value, there’s not a lot to this song, but it seems like Spank Rock is parodying fast-fame and the one hit wonders that are so prevalent in today’s music industry. The song is also undeniably catchy, and given that the new album is titled ‘Everything Is Boring and Everyone Is a Fucking Liar’, we can certainly expect far more witty cynicism in the future.
