Imagine if a member of Atomic Kitten decided to go solo, got a slightly intriguing stage name and a stylist and asked Diplo to help with producing duties. That’s basically Sunday Girl in a nutshell. She’s bubblegum pop all right, but ‘Love U More’ leaves you with a bit of a toothache rather than a sweet aftertaste.
With trebly vocals and a happy-go-lucky tune, the song’s main success lies in how annoyingly catchy it is. The other joy to be found is in the abundance of cringe-worthy lyrical gems like “You can turn wine into water / Turn sadness into laughter / But you know you can never make me love you more”. All very well-meaning sentiments, but the amount of motivational optimism will probably have a similar effect to High School Musical’s notorious ‘We’re All In This Together’. It may even make you feel queasy – or at least in need of a song to provide a reality check.
Sunday Girl might’ve won comparisons to Alison Goldfrapp and Bat For Lashes in the past, but sadly her most recent effort is more Eurovision cheese than synth-pop diva.
