This second single from Two Door Cinema Club will inevitably come with a wave of 2010 hype and BBC Sound of 2010 commendations, such is its melding of what is popular both in mainstream circles and the indie ‘underground’. The opening salvo is reminiscent of Delphics’ ‘Doubt’ before a crisp riff announces the start of the song itself. The chorus’ instrumentation is indebted to the wonderful Kubichek, shimmering tremolo and mechanical drumming interloping with Alex Trimble’s delicate-yet-somehow-powerful vocal; he sounds like a particularly impassioned 15 year old whose voice is only just settling into its male state, still able to reach pre voice breaking highs.
The instrumental breakdown two thirds of the way through is particularly interesting, suggesting a) why Kitsuné have championed them and b) why they could break through to the mainstream yet retain the interest of the scene that spawned them. Three Trapped Tigers’ ‘1’ comes to mind, as dischordant, jerked guitar battles with electronic drumpads for your attention. It shows a diversity of influence and the possibility of a broader ranging album than you would first expect.
The darker, brooding cousin to the summery, shimmering ‘Something Good Can Happen’ (which incidentally is the opener to the ace ‘Kitsuné Maison 7’), ‘I Can Talk’ is not just a preview of Two Door Cinema Club’s forthcoming album but also a reminder that yes, they may be young but the young are capable of surprising everyone, including themselves. File next to Late Of The Pier as a band who are capable of shocking everyone.
