New music guide The Neu Bulletin (11th June 2015)
Today’s new music guide contains Oceaán, Tep No and Miya Folick.
The Neu Bulletin is a daily update of the most exciting new things DIY’s listening to. Think of it as a stream of recommendations that every so often pops up something spectacular. Most of these are Bandcamp finds, big ups from readers or cheeky submissions that pop out the inbox.
Every day we offer up a choice show, a song of the day (branched under the understated heading “Big Neu Thing”) and a little something extra that’s caught our attention. Check back here every day for your latest Neu Bulletin delivery and follow our ‘Listen’-tag for everything new music related.
THE GIG: Oceaán — Courtyard Theatre
Manchester producer Oliver Cean has been working up to this moment for quite some time. Producers come and go, and initial hype can fizzle out into a muted, head-bopping, behind-the-laptop set of nothingness. But with a full band, he’s been putting together a full ‘AV’ show, and it makes its London debut tonight at the Courtyard Theatre. William Arcane supports.
THE BIG NEU THING:Miya Folick — Strange Darling
“I think you’re the strangest thing,” sings LA newcomer Miya Folick on her hazy headrush of a single, ‘Strange Darling’. What she’s ignoring is her own sense of oddness. Weird is the endgame for her acoustic-led but alien-like songwriting. This latest cut takes a bedroom pop aesthetic and runs with it into the hills, bringing companionship and romance to completely new territory.
OTHER NEU BUSINESS:Tep No — Pacing
Basking in an off-kilter, UMO-like filter, Canadian Tep No has a skill for production that matches up with the summer like peas in a pod. Latest track ‘Pacing’ is a gorgeous synth swarm, with a simple, clipped guitar line spiralling out alongside hushed, softly-softly vocals. It’s 99% about the aesthetic, here, but there’s also a sweet pop song swimming around.
