Green Day dedicate ‘American Idiot’ to Trump at the EMAs
It was originally a protest song aimed at former president George W. Bush and his early-noughties administration
During a performance at this year’s MTV EMAs, Green Day dedicated their song ‘American Idiot’ to human toupee and juddering waxen lizard-man Donald Trump, ahead of the U.S. presidential election.
The band were performing to celebrate winning the Global Icon Award. “Most of all, it’s nice to be out of America just for a second, because of this horrendous election that’s going on right now,” said frontman Billy Joe Armstrong, collecting his prize from actor Idris Elba in Rotterdam. “Our entire country is about to have one big, collective heart attack.”
‘American Idiot’ was originally written as a protest song aimed at former president George W. Bush and his early-noughties administration. Green Day tweaked the lyrics for the occasion, singing “can you hear the sound of hysteria? The subliminal mind-Trump America,” instead. The band also performed ‘Bang Bang’ from their latest album ‘Revolution Radio’.
