Neu Home School
Never has all-out sadness sounded so refreshing, all thanks to Brighton’s Jack Kaye.

There’s no denying it: The last couple of years have witnessed a surge of heart-on-sleevers being unafraid to put their feelings on tape. Drake leads the charge in one world, while Waxahatchee’s represented an underground movement that’s stolen the show in 2013. Add to this an apparent emo revival and you’re essentially confronted with an emotional outpouring en masse.
Honesty and all-out sadness hasn’t been exhibited like this before, though. Home School is Jack Kaye, a Brighton resident applying cutting truths in the form of dreamy, summer-ready guitar pop. Imagine if Real Estate ditched their picnic mats & rhubarb lemonade and instead reached for the gin and decided to go on some soul-searching. All of Jack’s recordings to date cite things like ‘I’m not myself today’ and ‘don’t look too happy’ - y’know, things you’ve heard before - but he’s applying routine misery to a clean, spacious sound. It’s an exciting development, worthy of soundtracking crying en communion.
