Weekend Highlights 10 Most Memorable Moments of Glastonbury 2023
As post-Glasto blues set in, DIY round up some of the most conversation-starting, core-memory moments of this year’s party on Worthy Farm.
It’s been nearly a week since Worthy Farm first opened its gates to this year’s Glastonbury goers, and - as always - this year’s edition has been a festival to remember. We have a look back on some of the weekend’s most joyful, daring, and jaw-dropping moments.
1) Elton John’s epic Sunday slot
Elton John using his headline slot to celebrate new artists as well as showcase his classic hits. Over the course of an epic set spanning nearly 2 hours, the Rocket Man brought out: Jacob Lusk (of Gabriels) and the London Community Gospel Choir; Tik-Tok sensation Stephen Sanchez; Las Vegas legend Brandon Flowers; and certified pop queen Rina Sawayama.
2) Arctic Monkeys’ hat-trick headliner
Arctic Monkeys completing the Glasto headliners hat-trick, returning to the Pyramid Stage for the 3rd time despite Alex Turner’s recent vocal issues. Playing a setlist honed over their recent UK tour dates, the Sheffield rockers met the thronging crowd with 70s swagger, wry smiles, and an oversized, personalised mirrorball. Obviously.
3) Lizzo’s pop masterclass
Lizzo pulling a reportedly 100,000-strong crowd for a glorious set full of flute solos and self-love affirmations, definitively proving that she should have headlined Saturday night on Worthy Farm. Highlights - if you can narrow them down - include her high-octane dance troupe, multiple costume changes, and the irresistible disco energy of ‘About Damn Time’.
4) Rina Sawayama’s charged performance
Rina Sawayama using her electric set to reference the recent controversy around label-mate Matty Healy as she introduced ‘STFU!’: “I’m sick and tired of these microaggressions. So tonight, this goes out to a white man that watches Ghetto Gaggers, and mocks Asian people on a podcast… he also owns my masters. I’ve had enough”.
5) The crowd singing ‘Video Games’ at Lana Del Rey
Lana Del Rey tragically getting her mic cut off due to noise curfews over at The Other Stage (she arrived onstage half an hour late), but leading the captive crowd in a chills-inducing acapella singalong of ‘Video Games’ anyway.
6) Foo Fighters’ so-called ‘secret set’
Foo Fighters - aka The Churnups - performing a not-so-secret early evening set on the Pyramid Stage. The rock legends were joined by Dave’s daughter Violet Grohl, before closing the show by dedicating ‘Everlong’ to their late drummer, Taylor Hawkins: “Let’s sing this one loud as shit for Mr T”.
7) The Last Dinner Party curing the Saturday morning hangovers
The Last Dinner Party drawing what’s been said to be the biggest crowd ever for that timeslot - 11:30 on Saturday morning - to deliver a set full of theatre, showmanship, and euphoric emotion. Their much-anticipated next single, ‘Sinner’, lands later this week - set those alarms.
8) CMAT being a self-deprecating pop sensation
CMAT stunning festival-goers at the Woodsies stage with tracks from her debut album ‘If My Wife New I’d Be Dead’, all while wearing gold fringed shorts and a t-shirt adorned with the phrase ‘CMAT is a silly bitch’. The fact it’s not on iPlayer is a travesty.
9) Chaos at Queens of the Stone Age
Queens of The Stone Age bringing pure, unfiltered chaos to close The Other Stage on Sunday night. Despite clashing with Elton, Josh Homme and co. effortlessly commanded a swelling crowd for circle pits and supercharged singalongs.
10) Sparks bringing out Cate Blanchett for a dance
Cate Blanchett joining Sparks onstage for their recent hit ‘The Girl Is Crying In Her Latte’. Having featured in the single’s music video, the Tár actress once again donned a bright yellow suit and green shades to dance and delight the audience over at The Park Stage.
