Introducing Get To Know… Gus Dapperton

Mixing emotive music with bold visuals, New York’s Gus Dapperton is one to watch.

Hello and welcome to DIY’s introducing feature, Get To Know… With two new acts a week, the feature pretty much does what it says on the tin: getting you a little bit closer to the buzziest new acts that have been catching our eye as of late, and working out what makes them tick.

We’ve recently introduced you to weirdo Londoners Sistertalk, Oxford’s Lacuna Common, Coventry newcomers FEET, bilingual synth-popper MUNYA and shimmering folk singer Elena Setién and Brighton’s DITZ. Today, we’re chatting to Gus Dapperton.

Having previously released two EPs - ‘Yellow and Such’ in 2017 and ‘You Think You’re a Comic! in 2018’ - New York-based Gus is currently preparing to release his debut album ‘Where Polly People Go To Read’, due this April.

He’s also recently released the video for new R&B-tinged single ‘My Favorite Fish’ and is currently touring the UK, playing Oval Space on 28th February.

Watch the video and read our Q&A with Gus below!

Describe your music to us in the form of a Tinder bio.

Clean.

What’s your earliest musical memory?

Dancing in the living room to Britney Spears.

Who were some artists that inspired you when you were just starting out (and why)?

David Bowie because of his ability to adapt to the changing times and his passion for every aspect of music.

You’re based in New York - what’s the music scene like there at the moment?

I’m not quite sure I haven’t been settled here for long, but I always admired that most people in New York are encouraging to up and coming artists of all genres and backgrounds.

Who would be your dream collaborator?

I don’t have one at this time.

Musically or otherwise, what are you most looking forward to in 2019?

I am releasing an album and it is a dream of mine that I had never thought would come together so quickly and sincerely.

Are there other artists breaking through at the same time that you take inspiration from?

I take inspiration from my loved ones.

If people could take away one thing from your music, what would it be?

That everyone should express themselves to the fullest despite inevitable judgment.
