In last week’s First On write-up about newcomers Splashh, we had a bit of a moan about fuzz-pop bands sounding too alike, with the likes of the aforementioned only coming along so often to stand out in a crowd of masses. We’re sort of eating our words now, considering another standout act have arrived from this cast of thousands in no time at all.
Parakeet is the project of Yuck bassist Mariko Doi, History of Apple Pie drummer James Thomas and former Kid Harpoon guitarist Jon Jackson. So indeed, with experience breeds originality, a sense of what works and what should be avoided. Parakeet’s output to date is 100% pure gold; two escapist tracks of an astounding nature - astounding in the sense that it’s difficult to envisage them being topped by anyone else in the distant future.
For every fuzz pop, garage rock crop of “alt kids” wearing fancy clothes but shying away from actual cheap thrills, there’s a band like Parakeet, with ‘Tomorrow’’s sky-reaching guitar licks and ‘Paper, Scissors, Stone’’s sharp-witted, hungover state of haziness. Check out the recently unveiled video for the latter; as pretty shapes fight for focus with gorgeous, grand landscapes.
