Over the past few years we’ve seen some excellent punk influenced acts emerge from Scandinavia to compete with the electro pop exports the area is mostly known for. In 2011 Danish punk four-piece Iceage released their debut LP ‘New Brigade’, a furious piece of raw emotion over 24 minutes. Last year the similarly intense debut LP from Stockholm punk act Holograms caught many an eye.
Now they have some impressive competition in the form of Malmö newcomers RA, whose psych influenced take on post-punk certainly takes cues from Iceage and Holograms but is decidedly their own. Formed only last year their demos made rounds online before being picked up by Malmö label Double Sun – who co-released YAST’s brilliant debut LP earlier this year.
Their debut EP, titled ‘Bloodline’, is due on 12th June and while it’s only four tracks long it’s a definite statement from the band, mixing post-punk with psych rock to create their own identity. A slower, more menacing Holograms, with more in common with Iceage offshoot Vår than the main act, and who would fit right at home on Captured Tracks or Sacred Bones.
