The DIY Class Of School Reports

Graduation The DIY Class Of School Reports

Next year’s Class Of is fast approaching, but in the meantime, we catch up with some familar alumni…

With the advent month growing ever-larger in the horizon, that special time of year is fast approaching. Forget about braving the swarms of Christmas shoppers and supermarket sweepers on an all-in mission to bag the last bargain yule log for one second, dear readers. In DIY land, December marks the start of Class Of.

We’re beavering away at mag HQ, putting the final touches to another jam-packed, fresh-faced line-up of bands to watch in the New Year. All will become clear next week. But in the meantime, we’ve decided to revisit some of the bright stars who’ve graduated from DIY’s Class Of, and blimey, they’ve excelled themselves….

Haim (Class of 2013)

When Este, Alana and Danielle first formed a band, it was a very different affair. Complete with handmade stools made by Haim’s dad, there was a distinct air of Dr. Fünke’s 100% Natural Good-Time Family-Band Solution about the whole undertaking. These days, they’re leading up the pop world.

What they said: “We’re scared out of our minds, but we’re really excited” - Danielle Haim

What we said: “It won’t be long before they’re filling the enormodomes by themselves”

What they’ve done since: They’ve come a long way from their first DIY interview, that’s for sure. Inspiring meticulous dance choreography with their ‘If I Could Change Your Mind’ video, and releasing their absolutely knock-out debut ‘Days Are Gone,’ Haim also supported Taylor Swift on her 1989 tour. And then hopped on-stage with Swifty and Nelly to sing ‘Hot in Here’. As you do.

Peace (Class of 2013)

We remember Peace rocking up like it was only yesterday. B-town still was the word of the moment, frontman Harry Koisser’s extravagant coat collection was still in its fledgling stages, and ‘Bblood’ was the first promising whisper in the direction of the all-out takeover that would ensue.

What they said: “The band is like having a wife. Except that, instead of these guys being a girl I find physically attractive, we’re four guys who smell bad.” - Harry Koisser

What we said: “Peace had better get used to hauling around those suitcases full of jackets and snakes… 2013 is theirs for the taking.”

What they’ve done since: Inbetween recruiting label interns to deface coats with white emulsion at 2015’s Reading Festival, and spending every penny to their name on a day out at Brighton Pier, Peace somehow made time to record two albums, ‘In Love’ and ‘Happy People’. They also headlined Brixton Academy this year, which is, y’know, no biggy.

Chvrches (Class of 2013)

From the off, Chvrches stood out, with laser-trained focus. Their soaring, goosebumpy electropop was always aimed skyward, and over the last two years, the Scottish trio’s lighting rig has grown to similarly mammoth proportions. These days, they’re unstoppable.

What they said: “Having people talk about your band just brings you to the table. If you don’t follow it up with something of substance, then you’ll be gone as quickly as you started” - Iain Cook

What we said: “Mixing the best parts of The Knife with a razor-sharp sense of now, they’re a fearsomely exciting new prospect.”

What they’ve done since: Since graduating from DIY’s Class of 2013, Chvrches have stuck to their word, following up their debut with the very definition of sustained impact - ‘Every Open Eye’. Next year it’s all aboard the PARAHOY! to join Hayley Williams and co. on the loudest boat in existence.

Wolf Alice (Class of 2014)

We’ve never made a secret of the fact we love Wolf Alice. We always knew they’d be fucking massive. The faint glimmer of ‘Swallowtail’ lingered craftily in a younger Joel Amey’s eyes, crowd-surfing occurred for the first time in the history of Birmingham town hall, and for a long time ‘My Love Is Cool’ was a meticulous work in progress. In a whirlwind that’s taken them from headlining Brixton, to the forest for a ‘Giant Peach’ flute solo special, it has been a wild few years.

What they said: “I think we’ve always expected stuff to happen - not in an arrogant way, but we wouldn’t have been doing it if we didn’t think there was merit in it” - Joel Amey

What we said: “They’re on the brink of having to fend off crazed fanatics. That’s how it should be”

What they’ve done since: Since Joff first whipped off his top at the DIY photo studio and smothered red paint all over his own torso for their Class Of shoot, Wolf Alice have upheld a pretty solid tradition when it comes to making a right old mess. In July of this year, they rolled around in a hard-to-shift combination of glitter and vaseline for their DIY magazine cover - all in the name of celebrating their three years in the making, best debut of a decade, ‘My Love Is Cool’.

Royal Blood (Class of 2014)

One single kickstarted a rumbling boulder for Royal Blood, who this year graduated to the main stage of Reading and Leeds Festival. Few duos hit louder than this hell-raising pair.

What they said: “We’re going to quit after this single,” Mike Kerr told us, after ‘Out of the Black’ came out. Luckily, they didn’t.

What we said: “This Brighton duo create a wall of sound far bigger than you could possibly imagine.”

What they’ve done since: Straight away, Royal Blood were snapped up as Arctic Monkeys’ support act, and went on to bag a number one with their self-titled debut album. The silly level of success hasn’t gone to their heads, though. The duo are currently writing the follow-up in a tour bus den.

Years & Years

Just a few years ago, Olly Alexander was best known for his acting; most infamously, appearing as a stalker in teen drama Skins. Now, it’s impossible to separate him from Years & Years. Conquering the airwaves, and struggling to find arenas big enough to contain them, 2015 has ended up being theirs for the taking.

What they said: “It’s been way, way more intense than I thought it would be” - Olly Alexander

What we said: “2015 looks set to be the making of this brilliant diverse bunch”

What they’ve done since: Ask yer nan if she knows a song called ‘King,’ and odds are, she’d probably say yes, before unveiling a Years & Years t-shirt. Besides scoring a number one with debut ‘Communion,’ all three members have been regular ‘spotted’ fixtures around DIY HQ ever since heading up the cover of our 2015 Class Of issue.

Jack Garratt (Class of 2015)

Jack Garratt’s ascent is still in progress, but 2015 has been a forming year for the multi-instrumentalist and top of his field saucy warbler. Looking towards next year, with a Brixton headline show looming, his momentum shows no slowing

What he said: “The reaction has been - for me - really unexpected, and a bit crazy”

What we said: “He is far more than a blog darling, building up a formidable reputation for himself.”

What he’s done since: After a summer of blazing the festival trail, Jack Garratt’s wound up with a well-deserved live reputation, and a Brits Critics Choice nomination. He’s also cultivated one of the most impressive beards in music. Bravo.

We’ll lift the lid on DIY’s Dec/Jan Class Of double issue next week.
