THE GIG
Waxahatchee - London, Dalston Roof Park
For all the cultured, discerning hip-types in London, this one’s for you. Tonight’s Waxahatchee performance (she’s been here all week playing solo sets and shows with Tegan and Sara) comes with an airing of the 1973 Terrence Malick film Badlands. So yeah, it’s a touch niche in terms of occasions, but it’s a fascinating one all the same.
THE SONG
Modern Hut - History
Don Giovanni-founder Joe Steinhardt has unveiled a new project titled Modern Hut, and announced himself with this symphonic strummer ‘History’. Taken from a soon to be released debut album ‘Generic Treasure’, ‘History’ follows a path of folk balladry, with Steinhardt the flaneur detailing his observations of people writing the grand narratives of history. Both garrulous and cutting, ‘History’ is an accomplished introduction to Steinhardt’s intellectual miser-folk. [Sean Stanley]
OTHER NEU BUSINESS
Sacred Animals & Pretty Heart - Toy
Steering Ohio singer Pretty Heart’s original into more enlivened, eerie territory was never going to be easy. Morgan Holligar’s recent Neu favourite is dark enough. But Darragh Nolan aka Sacred Animals is never one to balk at a challenge. He adds flickering, pitch-shifted effects and a sparser background to shift this ultimately collaborative work into an entirely different headspace. The china doll that graces the artwork makes it extra creepy.
