News The Neu Bulletin (18th February 2014)

Your daily new music guide, featuring Speedy Ortiz, Dig, The Interest Group and Gengahr.

The Neu Bulletin is a daily update of the most exciting new things DIY’s listening to. Some of the music you’ll like, some of it you won’t. We can’t please everyone, sorry.

Every day we offer up a choice show, a song of the day (branched under the understated heading “big Neu thing”) and a little something extra that’s caught our attention. Check back here every day for your latest Neu Bulletin delivery.

THE GIG
Speedy Ortiz, Empty Pools, Dig - London, Birthdays

Supporting the smart alternative rock of Speedy Ortiz - a band getting more exciting by the second - are Bristolians Empty Pools and the even newer Dig, playing one of their first shows so far.

THE BIG NEU THING
The Interest Group - Wire

A good while back The Interest Group shimmered out with a hippyish, escapist debut take ‘The Boys and The Girls’. They’ve since become a moodier, more experimental project, hoisted up and protected by concrete walls and a sparse-sounding approach. New song ‘Wire’ is the sound of a thousand solid objects colliding, keen musicianship defining a clever bugger of a song that’s half Portishead, half Lower Dens.

OTHER NEU BUSINESS
Gengahr - Fill My Gums With Blood

Gengahr used to go by RES on a handful of debut demos. Name-change ahoy, nothing’s much shifted in the North Dakota residing musician’s approach. Guitars are still ever-inventive, eager to please. Vocals slip by like sugar glaze on top of an already candied state of semi-consciousness. The statement ‘Fill My Gums With Blood’ isn’t exactly easy on the senses, but there’s a definite undercurrent of pent up energy here too, one that might manifest into near-violent musical outpour.
