New music guide The Neu Bulletin (7th July 2015)
DIY’s new music tips, featuring Girli, Alex L’Estrange and Oxford Drama.
The Neu Bulletin is a daily update of the most exciting new things DIY’s listening to. Think of it as a stream of recommendations that every so often pops up something spectacular. Most of these are Bandcamp finds, big ups from readers or cheeky submissions that pop out the inbox.
Every day we offer up a choice show, a song of the day (branched under the understated heading “Big Neu Thing”) and a little something extra that’s caught our attention. Check back here every day for your latest Neu Bulletin delivery and follow our ‘Listen’-tag for everything new music related.
THE GIG: Girli (w/Pearls Negras)
Girli makes divisive, no-fucks-given pop to shock the system. And she’s already hanging out with fellow opinion-splitters Hannah Diamond and QT. No PC Music affiliations here - just the kind of sample-stuffed and obnoxious pop that’ll only gain attention. Tonight she supports Pearls Negras.
London, Birthdays
There’s a familiar dose of sincerity sitting behind the depths of Brisbane musician Alex L’Estrange’s debut track. ‘Reconsider’ is half Kurt Vile/War on Drugs escapism, half harsh reality checks. Acoustic-led but in debt to a swarm of reverb and effects, it’s direct without overdoing the cliched sentiment.
THE BIG NEU THING:Alex L’Estrange
Sitting something in the midst of a lucid dream, Oxford Drama’s ‘Asleep/Awake’ is a gorgeous slice of escapism. If chillwave never died, it’s being kept alive by the pulsating electronic percussion and dreamy vocals of this track. The song’s taken from the Polish duo’s debut EP, released earlier this year on Bennnessel Records.
