Algiers sign to Matador, release ‘But She Was Not Flying’ track

Atlanta group are readying a self-titled debut.

Atlanta-based trio Algiers have signed a deal with Matador Records (Darkside, Iceage), unveiling a new track called ‘But She Was Not Flying’ in the process.

Fronted by the enraged vocals of Franklin James Fisher, the three-piece practice “doom soul”, skewing conventional songwriting though a genre-melding aesthetic. ‘But She Was Not Flying’ does a lot to back up the band’s claims of being inspired in equal parts by Serge Gainsboug, Public Enemy and Nina Simone. Formed in 2007, they put out a debut 7” on Double Phantom before signing the Matador deal.

Listen to Algiers’ new track below. They play their debut New York shows at NYC Mercury Lounge (4th February) and Brooklyn’s Baby’s All Right (6th February).
