Fear factor
Avey Tare’s Slasher Flicks get spooky for ‘Catchy (Was Contagious)’ short film
No trick, just treat - watch the Animal Collective man howl at the moon.
Avey Tare’s Slasher Flicks started in part because the Animal Collective man figured he wanted to recreate the fun and the fear of slasher films, all with the help of his new mini-supergroup.
With ‘Enter the Slasher House’ out earlier this year, a new video for ‘Catchy (Was Contagious)’ has made a timely entrance. Directed by Abigail Portner, it’s shot in eerie light grey, telling the story of a wandering child that gets chased by a terrifying bearded stranger into the woods.
The short film will get its first play in Los Angeles at the Haunted Hotel Bash, Ace Hotel. Portner says of the video that she “wanted to make a video that referenced old horror movies from the 1950s Universal horror era.
“The videos I make for Animal Collective and my own personal style is pretty specific so it was great to work with Giovanni [Ribisi] because I feel like he just got it. We were on the same page thematically, reference-wise and with regards to the style of filming and our goal - to create something that has a classic, pretty 1950’s feel to it but the undertone is still very dark.”
