Big Bug hit the road in ‘Automobile’

Romantic pop-rockers add bite to soppy sentiment on their latest single.

Every weekday, DIY’s new music know-it-all Neu brings you one essential new release to get obsessed with. Today’s Neu Pick comes from Big Bug.

On Big Bug’s new single ‘Automobile’, they prove to be top of the pops when it comes to marrying upset with the upbeat.

Down in the dumps sentiment is buoyed by gang vocals and chirpy guitars, frontman John Davies’ pleas to the object of his affection to “stop looking at me like that - you know it makes me smile,” sitting in stark contrast to the track’s hop-skip. It’s that hopelessly romantic, classic croon that really pitches this lot right up alongside the likes of The Magic Gang and Neu favourites Trudy & The Romance, though - by the time ‘Automobile”s wailing, hopeful guitar solo kicks in, the gloom’s been lifted and they’re roaring off into the sunset.
