Buffy Sainte-Marie wins the Polaris Music Prize 2015
The folk veteran beat the likes of Drake, Tobias Jesso Jr. and Alvvays to the Canadian award.
Native Canadian veteran Buffy Sainte-Marie has won the Polaris Music Prize 2015, beating the likes of Drake, Alvvays, Caribou, and Tobias Jesso Jr. to the prize.
Buffy Sainte-Marie’s 21st album ‘Power in the Blood,’ took home the award, and $50,000 (£24,400) in prize money. The activist and singer first made a name for herself on the 1960’s Greenwich Village folk scene, alongside other Canadian musicians Leonard Cohen, Neil Young, and Joni Mitchell.
It’s not the first time that the judges of the Polaris Music Prize have made somewhat unpredictable choices. Though Arcade Fire, Feist, and Fucked Up have previously won, last year the prize was won by throat singer Tanya Tagaq.
