Chappell Roan unveils video for heartbreak power ballad ‘The Subway’
The pop superstar’s iconic red hair takes centre stage in the visualiser, which was shot on location in New York.

Chappell Roan is back with new single ‘The Subway’ - another monolithic pop number that finds the star at her most vulnerable, grieving in the wake of a significant break up.
Produced by and co-written with Daniel Nigro, the track acts as a follow up to March’s ‘The Giver’ - a country-flavoured offering which was itself our first taste of new music from Chappell since the runaway success of her 2024 standalone single, ‘Good Luck, Babe!’.
A soaring power ballad that has all the hallmarks of a heartbreak classic, ‘The Subway’ sees Chappell railing against the frustration and sadness that comes from being unable to escape the memory of an ex. “The cliche of “the girl that got away” barely scratches the surface for me with this song,” she has explained. “I wrote it as I was stumbling around New York with a broken heart and I kept envisioning us on every street, fire escape, coffee shop, park and yes… the subway.”
‘The Subway’ has also arrived accompanied by an ambitious, high-concept video shot on location in New York, in which Chappell gets - quite literally - tangled up in memories, until she finally makes the call to chop off her signature locks. Check it out (and revisit our 2023 interview with the breakout superstar) below.
