There’s no stopping Charli XCX’s rise to becoming the ultimate, best pop star in the world. Not even a delayed album release can put stop to that. With one great big shout of “Fuck you, sucker!”, she’s this month’s DIY cover star.

With the free magazine out on Friday 3rd October in all the usual stockists and online, Charli’s cover feature dives straight into the mind of 2014’s biggest pop phenomenon. Gone with the guest spots, she’s now a bonafide celebrity in her own right, and she’s dealing with this new success one greasy onion ring at a time.

Not afraid to speak her mind, Charli XCX isn’t going to pass media-training for the Disney Club, and she doesn’t especially care for celebrity culture. “It’s all about rules, and what you can say, and what you can’t say,” she sighs, ”gossip, reality and celebrities. It’s not about iconic moments in music history.” Talk turns to the MTV Music Video Awards. “I was kind of bored,” she puts it, quite bluntly. Riff Raff and Katy Perry’s denim homage to Britney Spears’ and Justin Timberlake’s matchy blue ensemble from 2001, she says, in the interest of fairness “was the best thing about them! That’s exactly what I’m talking about.”

Charli has a plan to up the ante, however. “I’d like to arrive on my school bus with an army of punk ten-year-olds spray painting the step-and-repeat [red carpet backdrop],” she laughs. “That’d be tight. That would be amazing, like the ‘Break The Rules’ video, but permanently. My band would hate me, though, there’d be no beds, they’d be just sat up the whole time. I’d love to roll around in a school bus, though, uh huh.”

Elsewhere in the new issue, there’s Jessie Ware, who admits to being the complete opposite of “rock and roll” while preparing for her new album, ‘Tough Love’. There’s also Ben Howard, an introverted, cabin fevered musician that’s also wound up becoming the UK’s biggest folk breakthrough in years.

Lower Than Atlantis are about to break big in a completely different way, and their self-titled new album represents a watershed moment between commercial appeal and uncompromising punk. When it comes to Weezer, they’ve been faced with snipes and critical jabs with almost every album, but their new release ‘Everything Will Be Alright In the End’ is their best in years, even if it won’t please everyone.

There’s also Bondax, the production duo touted to have an incredible 2014, only to have things take a turn for the worse with the aid of a stolen laptop. Now they’re fighting back.

That’s not forgetting interviews with resurgent Danish punks Iceage (showing a softer, stranger side on their new LP), the iconic Slipknot, plus the solo-favouring Johnny Marr and Radiohead drummer Philip Selway.

In Neu, we offer introductions to Palace, Kid Wave and 2014’s go-to producer TALA.

Reviews delivers verdicts on Weezer, Aphex Twin, Kindness, Sivu, Peaking Lights, Caribou, Flying Lotus and loads more.

DIY’s October issue is free from all our usual stockists from Friday 3rd October. Pre-order a physical copy with a DIY tote bag below if you’re not near a stockist / outside of the UK.
