Charli XCX scraps her ‘punk’ album?

The singer-songwriter’s Swedish scuzz won’t be seeing the light of day… yet.

When Charli XCX posted her cover of little-known Swedes Snuffed by the Yakuza’s ‘Allergic to Love’ it sounded like, basically, the best thing ever.

She’d not long told us (on the cover of the Xmas 2013 issue of DIY Weekly) she’d been channelling punk - and there it was, brilliantly raw, snotty and in-your-face.

However, in a new in-depth interview with Popjustice, the singer-songwriter has put the other material recorded during those same sessions on the shelf. For now, at least.

“I’ve made a pop record”, she tells them about the album that was originally slated to be released in May. “I think it’ll be completely finished by the end of July.”

“I still want to put out all the stuff I did in Sweden,” she adds, “That is going to happen at a later point.”

(Hooray!)

Among the artists Charli has collaborated with on the (“pop”) album are Weezer’s Rivers Cuomo and Rostam Batmanglij of Vampire Weekend. See Charli showcase new song, ‘Breaking Up’ - that does carry more than a hint of the former’s output - at this year’s SXSW.
